Green Hills is older, denser and more heavily treed than most of Davidson County, and the housing runs from 1930s cottages to substantial rebuilds on the same street. Both ends of that range need a careful crew rather than a fast one.
What We See in Green Hills
The tree canopy here is genuinely old — willow oak, hackberry and maple that predate most of the current houses. Hackberry is the one that causes us the most work: it sheds fine, stringy litter continuously rather than in a single autumn drop, and fine litter is exactly what compacts into a downspout outlet and stays.
The housing mix is the other factor. Original cottages and ranches often still carry their first gutter system, sometimes half-round, occasionally with fascia that has softened behind the trough. Newer builds and full rebuilds on the same blocks have modern seamless systems with a different set of issues — long runs, complex rooflines, and more valleys than the footprint suggests.
We treat those as two different jobs, because they are. On an older home the inspection matters as much as the cleaning; on a new build it is mostly about linear footage and access.
When to Book in Green Hills
Hackberry does not cooperate with a single annual visit. Twice a year is the baseline, and homes on the older tree-lined streets off Hillsboro and Estes genuinely benefit from three.

Gutter Repair in Green Hills
Green Hills splits cleanly on repairs and the split follows the housing stock. The black vertical streaks running down the face — tiger striping — are oxidised aluminium bonded with road film and organic residue washing off the roof. It is not debris. It has nothing to do with whether the trough is clear, and a perfectly clean gutter can look filthy from the street.
This is the most common reason Green Hills homeowners go looking for exterior cleaning, and it is worth knowing it is a separate job from a gutter clean. Brightening the face is a surfactant wash rather than pressure, which would strip the coating off the aluminium. It is quoted separately, and on a house where the gutters were cleaned last month it is usually the only thing actually needed.
Berry Hill, Melrose and the Streets Between
The area people call Green Hills does not stop at the Mall. We work the whole run south and east of it, and the housing changes character every few streets. Berry Hill is the odd one out — small-footprint post-war houses now half converted to studios and offices, which means a lot of low single-storey roofs, short gutter runs and owners who are businesses rather than residents.
Melrose and the streets toward Woodmont are closer to classic Green Hills: mature trees, original fascia, and a mix of homes that have been extended more than once, so the roof planes meet at angles that trap debris. Belle Meade and Forest Hills sit adjacent and are regular work. If you are on the boundary and unsure, the answer is almost certainly yes — say the street when you ask.
Gutter Caps and Covers Under Old Trees
Plenty of Green Hills homes already have caps or covers fitted, often by whoever last replaced the roof. They earn their keep against leaves and twigs. They do very little against what this canopy actually produces, which is fine hackberry litter and shingle grit that passes straight through any mesh and settles into a compacted layer at the bottom of the trough.
The failure mode is quiet: the gutter looks fine because you cannot see into it, and the first symptom is water sheeting over the front in a heavy rain. Covered gutters here still need periodic service — panels lifted, trough cleared properly, panels refitted. That is part of a guard service visit rather than an extra discovered halfway up the ladder.
